Last month we came together at The
Westin in Alexandria, VA "To Understand, To Plan and To Dream". Deborah
Naish introduced us to “Decision Making and The Executive Director” and offered
a great pre conference study that set the tone for the days ahead.
“Measuring Success," led by Sasha
Litman and his team, offered an incredible program that explored ways of
aligning vision and values with data; moving away from anecdotal and historical
decision making patterns, towards information based decision making that will
help lead to long term sustainability of our institutions.
Our early mornings offered a
variety of options, from Zumba classes led by our colleague Barbara Merson,
Torah study with Tal Rosen, or a short walk to the gym. Our evening outing to
Mount Vernon was fabulous as we explored George Washington’s mansion then
enjoyed dinner at the colonial style restaurant.
On Tuesday, we had the opportunity
to hear from current and future URJ leadership as Rabbi Eric Yoffie spoke about
the Youth Initiative to be introduced later at the Biennial and Incoming
Chairman of the URJ Board, Steve Sacks shared his thoughts. Later during the
NATA plenary, it was exciting to be introduced to Rabbi Rick Jacobs, Incoming
URJ President and Rabbi Jonah Pesner, incoming Senior Vice President, as they
shared their vision for future Reform Movement. Tuesday also offered 6 workshops
with our NATA colleagues who discussed current issues in our Temple management
lives. We enjoyed a wonderful entertaining closing night while honoring Debbie
Coutant, Mark Jacobson and Nancy Schneider our long time colleagues.
Lastly, Wednesday presented a
unique and exciting program as Presidents of URJ affiliates came together to
discuss and share their thoughts on future movement, and some thoughts about
future organized American religion were presented with guests from NACBA and
NAASE.
We look forward to seeing you next
year in Detroit.
